Winchester ( TN) “WinterFest” Results:

Margarette , Alabama ’s Danny Peoples is frequently given the moniker, “The Dominator”. Fans and racers alike may sometimes scoff at catchy nicknames but nobody in attendance at the March 9th, “WinterFest” at Winchester Speedway in Winchester , Tennessee would dare try and refute Danny’s Dominator claim after viewing his performance in the 40 lap Late Model feature.

Peoples trailed only Ronnie Johnson during time trials (15.965 to Ronnie’s 15.859) and the first 5 laps of the feature event but once out front, the race was for second spot. On every restart Peoples would pull off to a substantial lead and though Johnson was working lapped traffic with the masterful aplomb that one might expect from the “Chattanooga Flash”, the former SAS champion could not cut into the Talladega Short Track champion’s lead.

If Peoples was dominant, and he was, them Newport , Tennessee ’s Duane Hommel was at least spectacular. Hommel started on row 5 and steadily picked off competitors, one at a time before he caught Johnson with eleven laps remaining. Johnson and Hommel had a nose to tail battle that keeps fans coming back to the track week after week and while on several occasions if appeared inevitable that contact and spinning racers were the only possible result, both racers kept the racing tight but clean and alas Duane settled for third behind Johnson. Vic “The Thrill” Hill had a great run in his first ever visit to Winchester and dove under two time track champion Jerry Ashley in the final turn to grab fourth ahead of the Elora, Tennessee charger. Robert Gant was sixth in front of  Mark Mears while Corinth, Mississippi’s Mark Sartain drove John Little ’s  spec engined racer to and eight place finish, nosing out Locust Grove, Georgia’s Shane Clanton and Hommels Newport neighbor, Jimmy Owens. Patrick Duggan, Anthony Burroughs and Terry English were the last three racers on the lead lap.

Fifty two late models took time trials with the Top 9 being locked in to the main event. The final 43 racers would run one of three Last chance races with the Top 5 transferring from each. In last chance race number one the front row looked like a middle Tennessee feature lineup on any Saturday night with Shelbyville’s Jay Brinkley and Lewisburg’s David Gentry, side by side. This battle lasted only about 50 yards as the two local hot shoes made contact in turn one and when the dust settled tempers were short and

Gentry was out for the day.

Webster’s says to dominate is to “Rule over, by superior power or authority”. Well if Danny People’s is the “Dominator”, then what to call Columbia , Tennessee ’s Michael Chumbley? The Mustang chauffeur merely wins championship after championship and features too numerous to count. Making a rare visit to Winchester barely slowed Mr. Mini Stock down and after a third place finish in his heat race, Chumbley marched his way to the front in the main event and never looked back. Add victory number (excuse me I need a calculator!) to the list. Though Chumbley prevailed the mini stock feature was one of the best races of the day and could nearly throw a blanket over the top 5 at the finish. Joey Harrison and Manual Williams were second and third with Tony Patterson edging Billy Davidson and Mike Norman for fourth. Norman and Williams were the heat race victors.

A very good tussle (albeit, caution filled feature) in the Open Wheel division ended as many have in the past, that is with Fayetteville’s, Alan  Holmes garnering the win. Jeff Tate prevailed in his battle with Shannon Davis and Jeff Ray for second spot. Heat race winner Steve Garner was running a very stout second place when he and Holmes made contact. The ensuing wreck would relegate Garner to the rear and essentially end his run for the roses. Holmes was the other heat winner.

Heat winner and early feature leader Gary Tucker looked to be headed for the Super Stock win, when a spin ended his stint at the front of the pack. Jeff Frame charged through the field to capture the win over Ricky Fuller and Brian Hudson. Jeff Woods also won a heat race.
