INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (Jan. 28) - Drivers competing in I.M.C.A. series and selected special events are on track to receive contingency awards from REAL Racing Wheels.
Fifty dollar product certificates will go to 'mystery position' finishers in each feature event in both the Deery Brothers Summer Series for I.M.C.A. Sunoco Late Models and the Jackpot Junction Tour for I.M.C.A. Sprint Cars.
Certificates to buy one steel wheel and get a sec-ond wheel of equal or lesser value will be given at each Day Motorsports Texas Super Sunday Series event, in both the Modified and Stock Car division, and at selected Modified specials throughout the 2003 season.
Competitors in any of the four divi-sions must have two REAL Racing Wheels de-cals displayed on their race cars to be eligible. Those decals will be part of the packet drivers receive from I.M.C.A. and will also be available at Deery and Jackpot races.

"REAL Racing Wheels will continue to support I.M.C.A. Modified and Stock Car special events from coast to coast in 2003," said I.M.C.A. Marketing Director Kevin Yoder. "Their awards will also be a part of many of our series events, as those are essentially special events at tracks in Minnesota, Iowa and Texas."
A long-time sponsor for I.M.C.A. series and specials in the Midwest, REAL added Super Sunday Series awards to their contingency program last season.

BEDFORD SPEEDWAY PREPARES FOR APRIL OPENER

January 27, 2003

(Bedford, Pa)  As area race teams prepare for the upcoming 2003 racing season, The Bedford Speedway, under the promotion of D.K.M. Racing, plans to build on the success of the 2002 season.

The excitement starts with a practice night on Friday, April 4th.  The weekly Friday night racing season begins on April 11th, with Super Late Model, Limited Late Model, Street Stock, and Cruiser/Hobby divisions circling the big Bedford 5/8 mile oval.

The 700 horsepower Super Late Models will once again be the headline division and leading the way will be the 2002 Bedford Speedway and M.A.C.S. champion Jack Pencil, of Bedford. Those expected to return to challenge Pencil include last year’s feature winners Scott Haus of Hamburg, Dave Kepner of Port Royal, Scott Rhodes of Somerset, Eric Zembower of Bedford and Shane Beegle of Everett. Veteran drivers Rodney Sweitzer of Stoystown, Larry Wright of Claysburg and Hesston’s Rick Singleton are also expected to return, along with a host of talented area drivers.

The 2003 Super Late Model rookie class will include two drivers from well known Bedford County racing families. Chuck LaSalle from Breezewood in the #37 and Andy Martz from Bedford in the famous Martz Chassis #M1.  LaSalle has been a fixture at Bedford and other area speedways since 1978, and had accumulated many feature wins in various racing divisions in his 25-year career.  Martz has moved up from the Econo-Modified and Limited Late Model divisions, and is the son of noted chassis builder and driver, Gary Martz.  The elder Martz notched 50 Super Late Model wins from 1972 until his retirement in 1982.

Special events for the Super Late Models include the Bob Sweitzer Memorial on May 9th, a 35 lap Memorial Day Championship on May 23rd and the Labor Day 55 Lap Classic on August 31st. The Renegade Dirt Car Series returns after a one year absence with a $7,000.00 to win 4th of July Firecraker Special.

The popular Central Pennsylvania 410 Winged Super Sprints led by Mifflintown’s, Keith Kauffman, will invade the Bedford Speedway on Tuesday night, June 10th with the annual Pa Posse Invitational.  Kauffman’s performance in last year’s event, which will go down as one of the best comebacks in Bedford history, should insure a standing room only crowd. Those drivers expected to challenge Kauffman include Fred Rahmer, Todd Hestor, Lance Dewease, Mike Wagner, Dan Shetler and others from both central and western Pennsylvania.

Special events for the Limiteds, Street Stocks and Cruisers will dot the schedule throughout the year.

The Limited Late Model division appears to have gained the most drivers and cars for the new year.  Street Stock Champion Brian Duffy of Bedford will be a contender for the Limited Rookie of the Year title. Other new rookie Limited drivers will include Stoystown’s Craig Perigo and New Enterprise veteran driver Jim Leidy.

Other events will include the annual Bedford County Fair Stock Car Championships in August, the Walt Aikey Memorial race, the second annual Bedford SpeedwayLegends night plus Kids bike races and Kids Race Car Ride Night.

Three new special events for 2002 include Mechanics Night, 70’s Night and the return after a 21-year absence, Ladies Powder Puff races.

70’s Night will feature the return of some of the famous drivers from the 1970’s era for a special match race.

Track crews will continue track surface improvements as weather permits and new concession stands will be completed before opening day.  General admission will remain at $8.00 for regular 4 division show, and the website has been improved to provide a wide variety of facts and information.

Any questions can be addressed by calling the speedway office at 814-623-0500 or via the web at www.bedfordspeedway.com

Mercer Raceway Park preparing for banquet, car shows, and season opener

By Mike Leone

January 31, 2003

Mercer, PA.With the month of January now a memory, the countdown has begun
for the pre-season activities that lead up to the 2003 season opener at
Mercer Raceway Park, "Where Saturday Nights Come Alive!"

The public is welcome to attend the awards banquet and dinner
for the final sendoff of the 2002 racing season.  The Yankee Lake Ballroom
will once again play host to the annual fete on Saturday, February 22.  The
Yankee Lake Ballroom is located on Route 7 just north of Brookfield, Ohio.

The doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and happy hour will continue until 6:30
p.m.  The buffet dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m.  Following dinner, the
top ten drivers in the Luxaire Heating & Cooling Sprint Cars, Big-Block
Modifieds, New Castle School of Trades Sportsman Modifieds, Butterfield's
Pub Stock Cars, and the Gardner Competition Engines 360 Sprint Cars will
receive their point fund monies and plaques.

For the fourth straight year, Mercer Raceway Park will continue
its tradition of honoring special achievements through the following awards:
the Living Legend, Legacy, Horizon, Outstanding Achievement, and the
Majestic.  First-time winners and those with perfect attendance will also
receive recognition.

"We are really proud of these awards that have become unique to Mercer,"
said owner Vicki Emig.  "These awards have been well received by the
deserving recipients and the audience.  We've even devoted a page on our
website with the history of each award."

Following the awards presentation, "Last Call," will once again
perform live for everyone's dancing and listening pleasures.  Tickets are
$29.50 and can be ordered by sending a check or money order to Mercer
Raceway Park, RD #1, Pulaski, PA 16143.  The deadline for ticket orders is
Tuesday, February 18.  No tickets will be sold at the door!

Mercer Raceway Park is proud to announce that we have again
secured the Southern Park Mall in Boardman, Ohio for the "Dirt Track Race
Car Show".  After nearly 30 years of an absence of race cars, Mercer Raceway
Park and its race cars will fill the concourses for the fourth straight year
March 5-9.  Drivers or vendors that would like to participate in this event
should call the Mercer Raceway Park office at 724-964-9300.

"The show is one week earlier from the dates we originally
released," stated Emig.  "The mall did an inadvertent double-booking so we
graciously moved our show up a week to accommodate them.  Already over 20
cars have reserved space."

Sister Simon Properties, Ross Park Mall, has graciously invited
Mercer Raceway Park to put on "Thunder in the Park" - A Steel Valley
Motorsports Gala.  This inaugural show will take place March 20-23 at the
Pittsburgh, Pa. facility.

"This show is a complete sell-out," announced Emig.  "The response to this
show was overwhelming so we added a fourth day (Thursday) to the initial
dates released.  Names are being taken on a waiting list."

Mercer Raceway Park will kick off its 52nd anniversary season on
Saturday, April 5 with Sprint Cars, Big-Block Modifieds, Sportsman
Modifieds, and Stock Cars.  A rain date of Sunday, September 6 has been
established with racing beginning two hours early at 5 p.m.

A 27-night schedule of events has been completed with the final details
being finalized.  The event schedule will be released by the end of
February.  Our color tri-fold schedules will be available at all of the area
mall shows.  More news will be released in the coming weeks along with
individual press releases on each of the mall shows and their specific
details.

off Route 19 on Fairground Road in Mercer, Pa.  Dirt track racing and
quality family entertainment are presented weekly April through October.
The office in New Bedford, Pa. is open year-round after 12:30 p.m. Monday

Kemp returns to promotional post at 34 Raceway
WEST BURLINGTON, Iowa (Jan. 31) - Larry Kemp will be back on familiar ground this season, as the new promoter at 34 Raceway in West Burlington.
Kemp promoted and later owned the track in the 1980s, before moving on to run the show at Hawkeye Downs Speed-way in Cedar Rapids and then for a post with the American Speed Association.
"I've gone full circle. It's nice to be back," he said. "The ASA thing was fun but it's hard when you're on the road 20 weekends a year."
"We don't plan any major changes," added Kemp, who has already purchased a home in Burlington. "I know car counts have been good here and I look forward to getting re-acquainted with a lot of people."
The Deery Brothers Summer Series for I.M.C.A. Sunoco Late Models will be on hand for opening night at the Johnny Johnson-owned facility on Saturday, April 12.
The 2003 point season for sanctioned Late Models runs from April 25 through Aug. 24. That division will be joined by sprint cars, modifieds, hobby stocks and thunder cars on regular Saturday night race programs.
"We're looking forward to coming back," Kemp said. "The rules for the cars are already pretty good. What we have to do next is find ways to put more people in the stands."

ELDORA SPEEDWAY

ROSSBURG, Ohio (January 28) -- Eldora Speedway’s recently announced Sprint Million has a new name. The historic event, offering one-million dollars in prize money to non-winged Sprints over the weekend of September 19 and 20, 2003, will officially be known as The Mopar Million Sprint at Eldora from this point forward.

The announcement was made Thursday afternoon in Indianapolis, simultaneously with the revelation that Eldora had granted sanctioning rights to the event with the United States Auto Club (USAC).

Eldora promoter Earl Baltes made public his intentions to stage the richest paying race in Sprint Car history while in attendance at the recent Chili Bowl in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Within days of that declaration, officials from Mopar Excitement were on the phone to Baltes, stating their desire to be part of that history.

“Eldora Speedway has a reputation of always trying to move this sport forward,” said Kevin Miller, Senior Brand Manager - Mopar Excitement, “and with all the activities that Mopar has this year with Tony Stewart Motorsports, etc., we felt sponsoring The Mopar Million Sprint at Eldora was a great opportunity to join in and showcase this sport in a fun and exciting way”.

Baltes retorted, “Unbelievable! This is my 50th year of racing, and I’ve never had anybody knock on my door wanting to sponsor a race. Mopar came to me, said they heard about this race, and they wanted in. We talked a little, a deal was made, and now this event, with Mopar and USAC both involved, is even greater than I ever imagined.”

The Mopar Million Sprint at Eldora will see two nights of racing over the one-half mile clay high-banked oval, with a unique format that will be detailed to the participants and fans within the next few weeks.

USAC’s Special Event status will find all cars in competition falling under their technical guidelines, while the conduct of the event will be under Baltes’ watchful eye.

Over $800,000 will be up for grabs in the main event alone, with the winner capturing $200,000 and 26th place taking home $10,000.

DICK BARTON LAUNCHES REDESIGNED WEBSITE FOR 2003

Asheville, NY --- Dick Barton, of Asheville, NY, one of the most successful dirt Late Model drivers to come out of the northeast, has announced that his website has been newly redesigned for the 2003 racing season. Barton, a multi-titled dirt Late Model powerhouse, has his newly reformatted website now online at: www.dickbarton28b.com.  It was created and designed by noted web designer Steve Courson.

“We’re real happy with the website and now it’s even better,” stated Barton. “In these days of marketing, publicity and exposure, it’s a necessary tool to have to further promote our sponsors and race teams. Plus, it’s a place where our fans can drop by and check out our progress.”

Among the many features of the newly renovated website include pages devoted to the team’s schedule, biographies, statistics, sponsors, merchandise and much, much more, including a new News page that will have weekly updates following the progress of the Ron Nielson Racing owned team. The new team t-shirts will soon be available through the website.

Basically the site was redesigned with a more updated,” revealed webmaster Courson. “The site will be updated on a weekly basis featuring any or all news links published regarding that week's race results and pictures if available. Also all career stats and crew member profiles have been updated. Most of the 2003 schedule is set.”

For 2003 Barton and team owner Ron Nielson will pursue the Friday night Raceway 7 points championship with a varied schedule on Saturday and Sunday nights. The team plans to participate in many of the Renegade, Xtreme and MACS series events that will be in the region as well as running the entire United Late Model Series (ULMS) and Tri-State Series sanctioned by ULMS.

Barton annually accumulates championships and 2002 was no different with Barton snaring titles at McKean County (PA) Speedway and Little Valley (NY) Speedway. Those two championships brought Barton’s career total to an amazing 30 track titles.

During 2002 Barton claimed 11 feature wins including the biggest payday of his career, a $15,000 victory in the MACS sanctioned ‘Fall Fest’ at Challenger Raceway in Indiana, PA. Also during 2002, Barton had 21 top three finishes, many of them in bigger paying shows, which resulted in a fifth ‘Cavalcade Championship’ for Barton. Only the legendary Bob Wearing, Sr., with seven titles, has been named the top Late Model driver in Western Pennsylvania more times than Barton. Barton was also ranked 11th nationally in the 4th Quarter balloting of the National Dirt Late Model Drivers Poll for 2002.

For 2003 Barton’s Ron Nielson Racing #28b will be a GRT Race Car equipped with a Malcuit Racing Engine. Sponsorship support will come from The Bolt Place, Raceway 7, Quik Lube, Carrera Shocks, Lamb Heating & Cooling, Shawbucks Niteclub, R & W Truck Service, GRT Race Cars and Malcuit Racing Engines.

“Bluegrass Speedway-Smashing the Loud Pedal in 2003!”

Jimmy Mars Has Rough Weekend in the Wild, Wild West
January 27, 2003

(Elk Mound, WI)  Jimmy Mars had an up-and-down weekend this past weekend at
Central Arizona Raceway, located in Coolidge, AZ.  He was behind the wheel
of fellow Badger driver Steve Isenberg's #9I MasterSbilt racecar.  Jimmy
started out the weekend on Saturday by winning his heat race in convincing
fashion from the third starting position.  This guaranteed him a starting
position in the front three rows for the $10,000 feature event on Sunday.
The front three rows were to be determined by a dash, which featured all six
heat race winners.  Jimmy rolled off third for the dash held before the
feature on Sunday and that is where Jimmy's weekend turned for the worse.  A
blown motor on the first lap of the dash cost him the chance to possibly win
the dash and the feature event.  Jimmy and Steve Isenberg's team were forced
to load up and forfeit their starting position in the A-main because of the
ailing power plant.

"The car was super fast all weekend and I think we had a great shot to win
both the dash and the race," said Jimmy from his shop today.  "I would just
like to thank Steve and the rest of the team for putting a great car
underneath me and giving me the opportunity to go out there and race.
Hopefully, we can put the bad luck behind us before we get to East Bay next
week for the Winternationals."

Jimmy will compete in all six events held at East Bay Raceway in Gibsonton,
FL from February 3-8.  Three of the shows will be run under the Renegade
DirtCar Series banner and the remaining shows will be Xtreme DirtCar Series
events.  The week is capped off on Saturday night with a $15,000 Xtreme
race, which will be taped by the SPEED channel to be aired on later dates.

Columbus Speedway News

Columbus , Mississippi

Race Summary for January 25th, 2003

Special Contributor-Jerry Carnathan, Jr

Clanton Stays Hot at the Winter Classic!

COLUMBUS , MISSISSIPPI -A strong field of 150 race teams braved temperatures in the mid 30 degree range and the recent artic blast to take part in the 3rd Annual Jim’s Used Cars Winter Classic. Those who made the trek from across the southeast were treated to a prototypical Columbus Speedway “get down” affair as Johnny Stokes had the 3/10’s mile high banked clay oval in fine condition for some of the best racing ever held at the fabled speed plant.

The weather was indeed cold, but the Johnny Stokes prepped track was in incredible condition, allowing drivers to take their machines "high, low, anywhere you want to go" all day long. Heat races in all divisions and B-Mains for Super Late Models and Mississippi Modifieds provided some of the best racing possible, as it seemed every race went down to the wire. The faithful race fans who braved the weather could have walked away satisfied before the features even lined up. They did not, and they were rewarded in grandiose fashion.

Locust Grove , GA driver Shane Clanton's resume is quickly getting longer as he is “en fuego”. One week after winning the 12th Annual Ice Bowl at Talladega Short Track, Clanton piloted his American Racer-shod, RSD Enterprises-sponsored Custom Racing Engines Rocket racecar from 12th place to victory lane at the 3rd Annual Jim's Used Cars Mississippi Winter Classic at Columbus Speedway. Even more impressive was that in his first ever Columbus Speedway appearance Clanton topped the field that was as good as it gets for a regional event with a “who’s who” roster including reigning 2002 Dirt Track World Champion Shannon Babb, 2002 SUPR Series Champion Rodney Wing, 2002 Southern All Star Champion Duayne Hommel, reigning and 7 time Mississippi State Champion Mike Boland, reigning and 7 time Magnolia State 100 Champion Billy Moyer, Rushing, Russell, plus many of the best the region has to offer.

Action got underway during Midsouthracing.com Pole Qualifying with "Mr. Smooth" Billy Moyer setting his Jay Dickens powered machine on the pole with a 14.26-second lap as he was the first driver to take to the track, with teammate Shannon Babb earning the outside front row with14.30-second elapsed time in the 43-car field. Two B-Main were required to fill out the 24-car starting field with Randy Little and Mike Boland taking the B-Main wins. Some notable drivers missing the show included 2001 Winter Classic Champions James Dean who incurred heavy damage in one of the B-Mains and Duayne Hommel who tagged the wall in qualifying and was done for the day.

The 40-lap frenzy would get underway with Moyer grabbing the lead from Babb after a struggle, and David Earl Gentry quickly moved up from his 6th-place starting spot to pull inside Babb for what would be a 29-lap, side-by-side heated battle for the runner-up spot. Moyer never separated himself from the two, and the three drivers often went 3-wide in the solid black and rubbered over high-banked turns.

Behind the battle up front, Darin Dorsey and James Cline battled side-by-side for the 4th spot for the duration of the event, while 2003 Ice Bowl champ Shane Clanton and the popular #222 of Mike Boland began to pick off cars on their way to the front using the middle and top of the track as Boland started deep in the field after winning a B-Main. By lap 17, Clanton had moved up to fifth, and four laps later, he had moved the yellow #25 machine into fourth place ahead of the still-battling Cline and Dorsey. Meanwhile, the intervals between the leaders would expand and contract regularly as made quick work of lapped traffic, running fast anywhere their cars would take them.

Misfortune struck on lap 29 after over 20 laps of green-flag racing as "The WeirWolf" Tombo Callahan blew an engine and attempted to exit the track. Babb piled into Callahan and Gentry into Babb as Moyer escaped harm, and the three damaged rides came to a stop at the top of and over the 3rd turn. Neither Babb nor Gentry were able to continue, but Clanton who was already quickly catching the front-running trio, would now inherit the 2nd spot.

After fending off a challenge from James Cline, Clanton set off after Moyer, catching the #21 machine on lap 32 with only 8 laps to go. Moyer continued to work the middle and upper grooves as he had all day. Clanton drove under Moyer on the bottom of the track on the next lap, and then began to distance himself as the race wound to a close. A jubilant Clanton would take the victory in his first visit to Columbus and take the victory back to Georgia with Moyer, Oxford Alabama’s James Cline, Pearl’s Darin Dorsey, and Mike Boland up from 18th, rounding out the top five.

Completing a top ten that saw hand to hand combat for position all day included Clanton’s teammate of Fayetteville, Georgia’s Rickey Williams sixth followed by Columbus’ Mark Stokes with a strong run with Meridian’s Rodney Wing eighth. Finishing the top ten were Talladega ’s Ross Martin up from 16th and Berry , Alabama ’s Scott Shepherd in tenth after posting an impressive third place qualifying effort.

Official Winter Classic Finish:

1-Shane Clanton 2-Billy Moyer 3-James Cline 4-Darin Dorsey 5-Mike Boland 6-Rickey Williams 7-Mark Stokes 8-Rodney Wing 9-Ross Martin 10-Scott Shepherd 11-Randy Little 12-Shawn Edwards 13-Jason Smith 14-Dennis Duncan 15-Marcus Minga 16-Jason McMahon 17-Skip Freeman 18-Anthony Rushing 19-Shannon Babb 20-David Gentry 21-Tombo Callahan 22-David Breazeale 23-Joey McKinney 24-Steve Russell

The Mississippi Modified Winter Championship action also saw incredible action on the wide-open race track in the 20-lap main event with a $1,000 on the line for the winner as a strong field of 35 “Modified Marauders” took to the Columbus high banks. Two B-Mains were needed to complete the field after the heat races with Ben Stephens and Tim White taking the B-Main checkers.

"The Wanted Man" Lee Ray grabbed the early lead, but quickly yielded to the #4 machine of Kalif Sellier. After mayhem marked the first several laps of the race, the drivers finally settled down and got to business. Sellier, Ray, and "Flyin’'" Brian Rickman went 3-wide lap after lap, with "Mr. Untouchable" Jason Hollis often joining the fray and battling with Ray and Rickman. Battles raged for position all over the speedway as the Modified division continues to put on amazing displays of racing in the rapid growth class.

As the hot action unfolded up front the #98 machine of Eric Hickerson picked his way to the front, and was soon right in the challenge for the top spot. Sellier of Pass Christina , Mississippi flatly refused give up the point, and was rewarded with victory. Eric Hickerson from Tennessee finished second with Columbus ’ Rickman completing the podium. Locals Jason Hollis and Lee Ray would follow closely across the line to complete the top five.

Official Mississippi Modified Winter Classic Finish:

1-Kalif Sellier 2-Eric Hickerson 3-Brian Rickman 4-Jason Hollis 5-Lee Ray 6-Bill Sudduth 7-Scooter Scruggs 8-Micheal Pickette 9-Bobee Palasini 10-Shay Knight 11-Chad Winkles 12-Tim White 13-Jamey Wynn 14-Greg Fanning 15-Dennis Pickard 16-Matt Pickette 17-Greg Campanova 18-David Frederick 19-Jimmy Dixon 20-Ben Stephens 21-James Dean 22-Cass Huff 23-Brock Otts 24-Andy Brown

"Hardcore Heavy Metal" local division action was, as always, as tough and as good as it gets. The Pro Street feature saw 2002 Track Champ Jeremy Shaw annihilate the field from the outside of the front row in the flag to flag romp that was without caution and take an easy win as the growing confidence the young Millport driver is quite evident. The battle for the podium was a good one as Bobby Nickoles, Mike Shaw, and Mike Langford put on a great show for the second position right up to the finish and finished in that order at the stripe with Tommy Gore completing the top five.

The Street Stock division saw big-race dominator David Honeycutt of Columbus put his #15 machine out front to stay for the flag to flag win In front of the “Thundering Heard”, while Terry King thrilled fans throwing repeated “slide job” attempts lap after lap in the battle for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, which was closely decided at the finish line. As Honeycutt cruised to take the checkers it was “Slow Hand” Scott Stripling making a move to just take the second place position at the line over Terry Kelley who had held second for much of the race. Terry King threw enough “sliders” to become a “Cy Young Award” winner and took fourth place with Harold Trimm finishing fifth in the 25-car field.

The Mini Stock gang laid claim to having their winner come from dead last to first to take the win. Mike Minor of Jenna worked his way to the front from the tail of the field and took the lead from heat winner Ron “Rebel Yell” Wyers on lap 6 and motored on to take the Mini Stock checkers. Wyers of Tuscaloosa finished a strong second with Jenna’s Robert Sanders rounding out the podium finishers. Nick Deese was fourth with Robert Yeates taking the fifth place honors.

Jeremy Glasgow and Buddy Glover, who lost the Cruiser World Championship by refusing the claim on their #24 two-person cruiser, found victory lane once again and made it stick ahead of second place finishers 2002 Track Champs Craig Murray and Kenneth Roach. Third place went to the team of Benji Jones and Curt Smith as the battle for second and third place was a good one.  Brad Fortner and Jamie Sudduth were fourth and the guys on the move were the team of Josh Edwards and Brady Sanders who worked their way up from 15th starting position to earn a fifth place finish.

Only Steve Lowe and Joe Sudduth would survive to finish the Pro 4 feature, with Lowe taking the win.

Columbus Speedway would like to heartily thank the drivers and fans who braved the frigid weather to come out and be part of a simply extraordinary day of all-out racing action.

Columbus Speedway will host two test and tune sessions during the end of February with practice sessions on Saturday February 15th and 22nd at 1pm .

Racing action cranks back up on March 1st at the Columbus Speedway Weekly Racing Series season opening "Golden Triangle 30" presented by Boland Performance. The next special event will be on March 7th and 8th with the 2nd Annual Rebel Challenge that is expected to draw a talent laden field of Super Late Model drivers to compete for the $8000 top prize as well as all local divisions in full-fledged, hardcore racing action.  Sunoco returns as title sponsor for three I.M.C.A.
divisions; spec gas option for tracks announced
VINTON, Iowa (Jan. 23) - Sunoco Race Fuels will return as title sponsor of I.M.C.A.'s Modified, Late Model and  Stock Car divisions this season, continuing the popular contingency program introduced three years ago.
I.M.C.A. drivers competing in the three classes at Sunoco-exclusive race tracks are eligible for product or fuel certifi-cates in the event of an engine claim or for winning a feature race.
Modified drivers accepting engine claims at those facilities will receive $100 product certificates from Sunoco and from Speedway Motors, good toward purchases made from Speedway Motors.
Vouchers good for 15 gallons of race fuel will be issued to Stock Car drivers accepting engine claims, and to Late Model drivers for each feature victory during the regular weekly point season.
Drivers must also display two Sunoco decals on their race car.
What's new for this season is the option for sanctioned tracks to spec racing gasoline, an issue that will have the most effect for the Stocks and Late Models because they are required to run gas only.
"We want to keep the use of fuel additives to an absolute minimum. There are a number of safety and performance issues involved with oxygen-bearing fuel additives, as well as restrictions by the Environmental Protection Agency," explained I.M.C.A. Vice President of Operations Brett Root. "Sunoco has developed a system placing infrared and molecular mark-ers in their different brands of fuel. Isotag inspection equipment used during tech measures those markers and can deter-mine if the infrared  marker has been diluted by  any kind of additive."
The spec fuel option will be similar to options tracks already have for minimum weight requirements for Modifieds and Stock Cars, and for the use of mufflers.
"It will not be mandatory for tracks to spec a race gasoline. It is simply an option for them to do so. This program does not include methanol in the Modified division, though it is likely I.M.C.A. will move forward on a track option to spec methanol as well, " Root said. "That's an entirely different situation and presents more issues than a racing gasoline-only spec rule."
Creating and maintaining consistency between tracks figures in the new spec gasoline option.
"Fuel is the most consumable product for race cars and we're concerned with consistency issues from track to track. We are in the process of structuring this to make it fair to member drivers and maintain consistency from track to track," said Root. "I anticipate that race tracks and drivers will take a hard look at this system, how it's structured and the benefits it provides to them. It will be a work in  progress to address the concerns of tracks and members. Obviously, we wouldn't be doing this if it wasn't for everyone's benefit."

2003 Carolina Clash Super Late Model Season Gets Closer
By Larry Long, Clash PR

FAYETTEVILLE, NC -  January 23, 2003- The Fourth Season for The
Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series will be interesting in many ways. For
starters the money will be better for all drivers that makes the events in
2003. Series Promotor Larry Lee again will book around 24 events this year
in the Carolina's, plus Southern Virginia and Northern Georgia.
The Clash season opens March 28 a Friday night 50 lap battle on the
Half Mile Clay oval at Thunder Valley Speedway in Lawndale, N.C. this show
will pay the winner $3,500 and the drivers and fans will see a lot of
improvements at the fast clay oval that's for sure and it should be a very
good field of cars entering the Clash Opening show.
The Clash then will roll into Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, S.C.,
Saturday March 29, the track your mother warned you about many times for
event number 2 on that Fast Half Mile Clay and this will be another 50 lap
showdown paying $4,000 to the winner and you can look for improvements as
well at Cherokee Speedway and a good field of cars.
The 2003 Clash Champion will get $6,000 at the annual awards night this
winter plus awards for the top ten drivers in the Clash points standings and
we'll see who's going to be "King of The Carolina Clash' in 2003. The 2003
Schedule is nearly completed, you can check the all new website at
www.Carolina Clash.com and get the 2003 Clash rules as well Larry Lee new
Cell number is 1-910-263-2285 if any Promotors, Sponsors, Car Owners or
Drivers wish to talk with him about any Clash matters.
The Carolina Clash Series has been sanction this season by The Southern
Dirt Racing Action (SDRA) and Darrell Payne of National Motor Sports
Marketing has been appointed to oversee Clash Sponsorships and Marketing for
the Clash Series and Clash Drivers.
Drivers can look for some $4,000 and $5,000 to win events this season
and the season ending Carolina Clash Bash event will pay at least $7,500 at
I-20 Speedway in Batesburg, S.C.  Oct 3 and 4 and this show will decide
who'll wear the King's Clash Crown in 2003.
Several new clay ovals added to the series action this year includes
Carolina Speedway in Gastonia, N.C. and Lavonia Speedway in Lavonia, Ga.
Both of these tracks will be a great show for the fans and the drivers are
looking forward to racing on both tracks.
Something new for the Car Owners and Clash drivers this year that could
put some money in their pockets. Any driver can pre-enter any of the Clash
Shows two weeks prior to the event and be eligible for a bonus from the
drivers that have pre-entered that evening Clash show. The Bonus will go to
the driver that finishes the highest among the drivers that pre-entered that
evening battle for the Carolina Clash Super Late Model show. This will help
everyone as we strive to make the Clash bigger and better for all concern
from the Drivers to all our great promoters that we race with yearly.
Drivers again will have provisionals during the year if they are in the top
15 in Clash points entering the second Clash event. The provisionals for the
2003 Opening event March 28 at Thunder Valley Speedway, Lawndale, N.C. will
come from the final 2002 points standings. You can look for a lot of racing
excitement all year as the Carolina Clash Bad Boys fire up for another great
Clash season. Lee had these comments about the upcoming season" We would
like to thank all our fans, 2002 car owners, drivers and our great sponsors
for always making our shows some of the best in the Southeast yearly. Lee
added,   "we're looking forward to working with all our track promoters that
we worked with last season as well as the new tracks that have been added to
the 2003 slate of events". So far new tracks added includes Carolina
Speedway, Gastonia, N.C and Lavonia Speedway, Lavonia, Ga.
2002 Clash Champion Scott Autry of Fayetteville says "We'll run as many
shows as we can this season". Mike Chilton of Mt, Airy will be back with the
Tobacco Special Racing team and Phil Hall of Mt. Airy may make a run at the
2003 title if all things come together early on. Roger Lucas of Benson and
David Taylor of Fayetteville last years Clash Coca-Cola Rookie of the Year
winner both will return for action on the Clash circuit in 2003. Mike Parker
of Fayetteville last years A-1 Hitch & Trailer Sales Hard Charger winner is
looking at his program for the upcoming season.  Steve Blackburn of
Greensboro and Danbury's Gary Mabe could contend for top honors this season
if things come together early on.  Look for Tony Hick and Billy Hick to be
in the hunt this season for top honors as well.  Johnny Stovall and Chris
Knight along with Dan Breuer and Bobby Day are looking forward to a solid
season on the Clash Tour in 2003.  A lot of drivers are looking around to
see if they can better themselves with a better team and a lot of questions
will be answered in time. Good Luck to all the Clash Drivers as they get
ready for the upcoming season and may the best man win the Carolina Clash
Cup and wear the Kings Crown in 2003. Scott Autry won the 2002 Clash title
by 9 points of Billy Hicks, could the 2003 season be just a close in the
Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series action.

Raceway 7 announces news for 2003

Conneaut, OH (January 21) - Raceway 7, the 7/16 mile clay racing oval located near Conneaut, Ohio, has announced some details regarding the 2003 racing season.

While the complete schedule is not yet available, Raceway 7 will be opening for the 2003 racing season on Friday, April 25. Practice Nights will be held on April 11 and April 18. Weekly Friday night racing for the Late Models, E-Mods, Street Stocks, and Hobby Stocks will continue through the end of August, with two special events to be held in September. The complete schedule will be released, as soon as it is finalized.

Some interesting changes are in the process of being implemented for the competitors at Raceway 7 in the coming season. Raceway 7 will become the first track in the area to use computerized scoring on a regular basis.  In addition, drivers in all classes will be required to have a one-way radio scanner in their cars so that they can receive information from the track officials.

"These changes will allow us to improve our programs greatly," said Raceway 7 owner/promoter Ron Nielson. "It will make our scoring perfect, and the scanners will speed up our restart procedures."

The computerized scoring system being used will be the AMB-IT system. This is the same system that is used by the DIRT Modified organization, and also by the World of Outlaws.

Each car in the Late Model, E-Mod, and Street Stock divisions will be required to purchase or rent a transponder. The transponders will be sold by Raceway 7, as a direct powered unit will cost $260. Units will also be available for rental on individual race nights for $25. The transponders will be located on all cars in the same area, and the location will be determined at a later date.

The system functions in this manner. Each time that a car passes the start/finish line, the signal from the transponder is read by a detection loop that is buried inside the racing surface. Each transponder has a
different signal code, and the code is then sent to a computer in the Official's tower. Then the computer processes the information and the results are shown immediately on the computer's screen.

While the $260 price tag for the racers may seem costly, the money spent now will easily be regained over the long run. The benefits of the system will easily outweigh the cost factor.

First and foremost, all events contested at Raceway 7 with this system will now be scored 100 percent correct. Close calls at the start/finish line will now be all correct. No longer will there be any questions as to who was where as tight packs of cars cross the line.

Almost as important is the fact that the restart lineups will be available immediately after a caution flag comes out. This will make restart delays shorter, allowing races to move much quicker. In the long run, less caution laps will even save racers cost in fuel.

There will be more benefits to the drivers. It will allow more flexibility in the rules in allowing cars back out of the pits should they need to make a pit stop. At a later date, depending on caution flag issues, starting fields may even be increased. And drivers can track all of their lap times via the Internet.

The radio scanner in the cars will be a huge lineup advantage, as well as a great safety feature. When the driver's see the caution light, a call will come from the tower to alert the drivers as to the reason for the yellow flag. In the event of a serious wreck where the red flag is needed, the drivers will be alerted to the area of concern and they can be stopped to avoid a problem spot. This will allow safety crews to respond quicker to an emergency situation.

Once the cars that are involved in the yellow flag are determined, the restart lineup will be available at that moment on the computer screen.  Immediately, the drivers can then be radioed as to their proper restart position. Then when the lineup is right, as long as the field is near turn two or the backstretch, drivers will be told that the race is restarting and green flag racing can quickly resume.

Another benefit of having radio contact with drivers is being able to alert them to specific problems with their cars. They can be alerted of flat tires, a tire rubbing other parts of the car in the event of damage, fluid leakage, and other possible safety hazard situations.

Another benefit of the system will be in the area of technical inspections.  The computer will know at all times exactly who the fastest cars are. This will keep the tech crews on alert to see which cars may need a closer inspection.

There is speculation that this sort of technology is will be used in time at almost all racing facilities. Raceway 7 is thrilled to be the first in the area to be using it on a regular basis. It will make things better for the race teams, and will provide the spectators with a more enjoyable night at the races.
