Francis First In Renegade Opener At East Bay!!!

   CONTACT: BRET EMRICK

Tampa (Gibsonton),FL 2-3-03

Steve Francis of Ashland,KY opened up the Renegade DirtCar Racing Series 2003 season capturing the $5,000 to win feature event Monday at East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa,FL. The 1996, 1997 and 1998 Renegade champion powered into the lead from his pole starting position holding off Rick Eckert by 2 seconds on the opening night of the "27th Late Model Winternationals".

"It's been a long time since we won a race here at East Bay", stated Francis. "We got lucky tonight. We qualified like tenth quick and some of the other guy's had problems in their heat races which worked out to our advantage. It put us on the pole for the dash and when we won that we got the pole for the feature. This track really threw everyone a curveball tonight. Everybody went too soft on tires, including us. It was a good thing the feature was 40 laps tonight. I don't think we had enough rubber left to make 50".

Trailing Francis and Eckert were Jimmy Mars in third with Brian Birkhofer fourth and Shannon Babb fifth. Completing the top were Davey Johnson in sixth followed by Billy Moyer, Jackie Boggs, Mike Balzano and Don O'Neal.

Francis quickly put his Valvoline/Mopar Performance Parts/Hoosier Racing Tire/Rocket Chassis/Stanton Racing Engines No. M15 Mark Richards Racing Dodge Intrepid R/T into the lead at the drop of the green flag Mars, Dale McDowell, Eckert and Birkhofer trailing at the end of the first lap.

Caution on lap 1 for a four-car tangle involving Jeremy Miller, Kenny Pettyjohn, Scott James and Billy Ogle Jr. slowed the pace. One lap after going back to green Eckert shot past McDowell for second and began to pressure Mars for the second. The races final caution flew on lap 9 when Donnie Moran limped to a stop with a flat left rear tire.

On the restart, Eckert blasted into second and began to put heavy pressure on Francis as Birkhofer moved past McDowell for fourth. McDowell lost the fifth spot to Johnson on lap 19. At the halfway point, Francis had Eckert all over him with Mars, Birkhofer and now Babb trailing with Johnson in sixth trailed by Moyer, R.J. Conley, Balzano and Boggs.

For the next ten laps Francis searched high and low to find his way past heavy lapped traffic with Eckert right with him. Francis cleared the lapped traffic on lap 32 which allowed him to open up his lead on Eckert which he stretched over the final 8 circuits.

The $29,000 event drew 87 drivers to the semi-banked 1/3rd mile with Eckert topping the field during CARRERA SHOCKS "Challenge the Clock" Time Trials with a fast lap of 14.837 seconds. Taking BRODIX,INC. heat race wins were Babb, Birkhofer, Johnson, Anthony Rushing Jr., Conley and Balzano. Grabbing the MASTERSBILT RACE CARS "B" Mains were Pettyjohn, Randle Chupp and James while Francis copped the ISKY RACING CAMS dash.

BILLY MOYER CLAIMS LUCAS OIL TRIPLE CROWN SERIES TITLE

Oglethorpe Speedway Park

Date:  February 4, 2002       Media Contact:  Ted Austad Phone:  912-964-8200

(Savannah, GA)  On the strength of a final night victory at Golden Isles Speedway in Brunswick, Georgia, Billy Moyer of Batesville, Arkansas was crowned the first champion of the newly created Georgia State Triple Crown Series.  The three night series began at Oglethorpe Speedway Park on Friday night before heading to the oil tracks in Waycross and Brunswick for racing action on Saturday and Sunday.  Moyer finished in third on Friday night while securing a second place run on Saturday.  His victory on Sunday secured his place as the very first Triple Crown Series champion.
"This was a wild series," said Moyer afterwards.  "The smooth, fast clay in Savannah coupled together with these two tracks makes for some wild set up changes.  But, we made it through and now we will head to Florida with some money in our pockets."
Moyer's run at the title began with a solid third place performance on Friday night at Oglethorpe Speedway Park in Savannah.  The smooth, fast half mile clay track was once again one of the fastest tracks the super late models compete on each year.  North Carolina's Chris Madden set the fast time with a run of over 122 miles per hour.
Ray Cook was the man to beat in the main event at OSP.  Cook shot out to leads of six or seven car lengths on several occassions.  Shannon Babb moved his ride into second after moving past Earl Pearson, Jr. near the half way mark of the 40-lap main.  Billy Moyer slipped Pearson back another spot a few laps later and that is the way the show would end.  Cook claiming the series first victory ahead of Babb, Moyer and Pearson.  Skip Arp was fifth followed by Freddy Smith, Jeff Cooke, Ed Basey, Steve Shaver and Jason Fitzgerald.
The series moved on to Waycross Motor Speedway on Saturday night and Freddy Smith showed the way with his new Dodge mount.  Smith set the fast time and then led every lap of his heat race and the night's 40-lap main event.  Smith was never seriously challenged as Billy Moyer worked into second ahead of local favorite Mike Carter.  Earl Pearson, Jr., and Shannon Babb rounded out the first five at Waycross Motor Speedway.
Sunday's finale took place at Brunswick, Georgia's Golden Isles Speedway.  The super fast half mile oil-based track saw Skip Arp set the pace with a qualifying speed in excess of 130 miles per hour.  Arp would start on the pole with Jeff Cooke flanking him on the outside.
A wild crash in the early stages of the feature saw Arp, Cooke and Chris Madden get taken out.  Provisional starter Tom Moore blew and tire and spun exiting turn four just as Arp and Cooke were going to put him down a lap.  Arp lifted as the caution flag flew leaving Cooke nowhere to go but into the rear end of the leader.  Third place runner Billy Moyer moved to avoid and Madden locked up his brakes sliding trunk first into the disabled Moore car.  Madden's brand new car was nearly destroyed in the accident.
"I don't know what the heck happened," said Madden.  "We came flying out of the corner and cars were everywhere.  I couldn't see anything."
After the debris field was cleared away, the race was Moyer's to lose.  Nobody could touch the five-time World 100 champion as he cruised to victory ahead of Earl Pearson, Jr., Mike Duvall, Steve Shaver and Dan Schlieper.
The Triple Crown Series also saw the return of the UMP Modifieds to Georgia.  It was a series that eventual champion Jimmy Owens would dominate.  Owens started off Friday night at Oglethorpe Speedway Park with a hard fought victory over Gary Clark and Jim Sherecki.  Brent Glastetter and Brandon Maxwell would round out Friday's first five finishers.
Saturday night at Waycross Motor Speedway, Owens did not make it to victory lane.  But, he did manage a top six finish.  Owens would fall victim during wild heat race action and would need to start further back in the pack.  Brent Glastetter took advantage of the poor starting slot for Owens and held everyone off for the win.  Garrett Darrett finished second with Brandon Maxwell, DJ Braddock and Todd Nehieser rounding out the first five.  Jimmy Owens would manage a sixth place finish on Saturday night.
Golden Isles Speedway proved to be the clincher for Owens.  His #5 modified was unstoppable at the huge half mile.  Nobody was even close to Owens as he dominated the entire event winning the heat, feature and overall series points title on Sunday afternoon.  Todd Neheiser, Brandon Maxwell, Skimp Henry and Brent Glastetter rounded out the first five in the feature finishing order on Sunday at Brunswick.
The plans are for the 2nd Annual Georgia State Triple Crown Series to take place the final weekend of January in 2004.  Oglethorpe Speedway Park has agreed to host at least one of the events with the possibility of all nights staying at the Savannah show place.

BOOPER BARE TO RACE AT VMS & POTOMAC
Driver to also launch new Website...

Rockbridge Baths, VA.   Veteran Super Late Model driver Booper Bare of
Rockbridge Baths, Virginia has finalized his plans for the upcoming 2003
season. Bare will be gunning for the track titles at Virginia Motor Speedway
in Saluda, VA and at Potomac Speedway in Budds Creek, MD. "We were planning
on only running the Dirt Challenge Series four races at VMS and the big
shows at Potomac", stated Bare. Then he added, " but that has changed in the
last week. With the money Bill Sawyer and Rick Jones have put up for the two
track Championship I have to go for it".  The money Bare is referring to, is
the $50,000.00 Bonus put up by the two Tracks if someone can win both tracks
point's titles in the Super Late Model divisions. "That Money plus each
tracks own points fund makes a driver look hard at this", He added. "Some
drivers race for the thrill alone but I also race for money too"! One thing
that makes this look good to Bare is the fact he runs well at both
Speedways. He has wins at both tracks including last seasons MACS Tour race
at VMS and the 1997 Southern Maryland Invitational both paid $10,000.00 to
win.

Bare has won over 110 races during his 20 year career as well as the 1991
Renegade Dirt Car Series Rookie of the Year and has tour wins, Renegades,
NEWS and MACS series. Bare is no stranger to running for a track point's
title. He has won titles at Friendship Speedway in Elkin, NC, 311 Speedway
in Madison, NC, Ace (when it was dirt) Speedway in Burlington, NC and at
Potomac. "It's not going to be a easy thing to do, you have to figure guys
like Les Hare, Jeremy Miller, Scott Cross and Roy Deese can all be tough if
they choose to run for this," said Bare. "I run good at both tracks and
they're only three hours from home so I can be home more instead of on the
road", he added.

Bare thinks his experience from being on the road will be a help chasing
after the two Track Titles and the $50,000.00 Bonus that is being offered.
"You still need to be able to get your car ready for Saturday night no
matter what happens on Friday night", he said.
"If you have to travel a long way back home and work all night it can hurt
your Saturday performance."

Bare's many fans will see him return to his own team in 2003 and his
familiar number 00 Rocket Chassis powered by Malcuit Racing Engines. The
team will also have backing from Poske's Performance Parts and Ramsey
Brothers Logging.

Bare is also launching his own website www.booperbare.com and it should be
up and running by the end of February. "We're working on the site and it
should be up soon, by the end of the month at the latest," he said. With the
new Website Booper Bare fans in the Virginia and Southern Maryland region
will not only be able to watch their driver race both nights but also keep
up his racing schedule and his status in the "Two Track Challenge" and
points standings at both tracks.
