SUNDAY’S MARCH 2ND TRIPLE HEADER PROGRAM AT HAGERSTOWN IS CANCELED

HAGERSTOWN, MD Promoter Frank Plessinger of the Hagerstown Speedway announced early this morning that the triple-header program of ITSI late models, Hoosier Tires Mid-Atlantic late model sportsman and the Ernie’s Salvage Yard pure stocks scheduled for this Sunday afternoon, March 2nd, has been canceled. The Hagerstown Speedway will try again to get the 2003 season underway on Sunday afternoon, March 9th, when the big block modifieds of the northeast will join with the late models in a double-feature program. The Twin 30's will get underway at 1:30 P.M. with gates opening at 11:30 A.M.. Warm-ups will start at 1:00 P.M.

"With the freezing and thawing conditions continuing this week and the forecast of more snow and temperatures to stay in the 30's the rest of the week, we felt it was best to cancel Sunday’s program now," stated Plessinger. "Until we get some decent weather, it will be hard to get the track in shape after the harsh winter."

Track officials are hoping that 2003 is not a repeat of 1999 when the first five programs were canceled due to inclement weather.

While the late models will be in action on March 9th, the late model sportsman and pure stocks next program is scheduled for March 16th.

Eldora Tradition Altered

ROSSBURG, Ohio (Feb. 25) -- An Eldora Speedway tradition has been altered. While the southwestern Ohio speed plant has again earmarked the last Saturday of March as its scheduled opening date, the bill of fare has taken on a new look.

In competition on March 29 will be the Sunoco sponsored American Late Model Series (ALMS), along with the United Midwestern Promoters (UMP) Modifieds and Eldora Stock Cars on the one-half mile clay oval.

Over the course of the past several years, the wingless Sprint Cars of the United States Auto Club (USAC) have opened the Eldora campaign; however, this year Eldora promoter Earl Baltes has opted to move their initial appearance to the second week of the busy slate - Saturday, April 5.

Defending ALMS champion Greg Johnson has vacated the Dean Miracle owned machine that he drove successfully last season, but is in hopes of having a team established by March 29 in an effort to duplicate his title. Former ALMS champion Jerry Bowersock has teamed up with Miracle to dethrone Johnson, while Brian Ruhlman and Kris Patterson loom as pre-season favorites to capture the lucrative ALMS crown.

Nearly a foot of snow currently blankets the Eldora grounds, but Baltes is confident that the opening night can go off as planned. That night’s action calls for practice to begin at 6:30 PM, with the first race scheduled to take the green flag at 8:00 PM.

Rayburn Chassis to ALMS Champion

ROSSBURG, OH (Feb. 25) -- Capturing the 2003 Sunoco sponsored American Late Model Series (ALMS) championship has taken on an improved look. In addition to the $5,000 cash prize offered by Sunoco Race Fuels and Bazell Oil, Rayburn Automotive, Inc. will be offering a complete chassis to the series champion.

Rayburn’s founder, C. J. Rayburn is very active in dirt Late Model racing and when approached with the idea of supporting ALMS, responded enthusiastically. “I have watched the growth of the Sunoco (ALMS) series and like what I see. They have a great group of guys racing, with a lot of talent, and I look forward to showcasing my products to them”, offered Rayburn.

As an engine builder, C.J. founded Rayburn Automotive in 1974. He soon saw the need for a better race car and in 1979, built his first stock car. From that point forward, there was no stopping Rayburn and his desire to revolutionize dirt Late Model racing. The success record for his chassis speaks for itself.

The race towards the ALMS championship begins Saturday, March 29 at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio. Greg Johnson is the defending champion of the series.
